Showcase - Facilities

Facilities

From 2008 the Centre for Science Communication will occupy new facilities in Great King Street, Dunedin. More information will be provided as soon as they are ready and we move to our new home.

In the meantime it is probably useful to know: the Science and Natural History Filmmaking stream of the Master of Science Communication uses Canon and Sony cameras and industry-standard editing software from the Apple Division, Renaissance Ltd.

Cameras

All filming is conducted using mini dv cameras, with much now being done in high definition. Our partnership with NHNZ means that students can get access to specialist equipment, such as pole-cams and underwater cameras.

Editing

Final Cut Pro, AppleAll editing suites use the industry-leading Final Cut Pro: software that is fast becoming the standard against which all other professional editors are judged. Final Cut Pro has been used to edit anything from factual documentaries such as Mark Lewis' brilliant The Natural History of the Chicken to full-length feature films such as Cold Mountain.

Rooms

Current facilities include a dedicated suite of rooms available for the sole use of our students: a common room with desks for writing; editing suites; an insulated sound room with links to the editing suites for doing narrations; a viewing room with data projector linked to the editing suites and cable television (National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and a number of movie channels), VHS video and DVD players; a storage room for gear - including a dedicated bench for recharging batteries; and a tape library/office for the teaching fellow.

We are expecting a major upgrade as a consequence of our expansion to become the Centre for Science Communication.
