Promotion of the Zoology Department at the University of Otago:
Every year Otago has a huge intake of students into first year Health Sciences, but most of them will not get entry into the professional health science courses. Many have little idea of what happens in a Zoology Department and what a degree in Zoology can lead to. This project entails producing resources and possibly exhibits or shows for schools, to encourage careers in Zoology. The research aspect of the project would involve finding out the numbers of students at Years 9, 11 and 13 (say) who are aware of Zoology and what the subject covers (the “before” data) and the monitoring of the initial success of any promotion, both in schools and at the university level. Outcomes could include video interviews with Zoologists, short films or on-line pieces of staff in the field or lab and info packs, including a DVD, for schools.
